We are thrilled to present the Advocate for Justice award to Aisha Hinds, Innocence Ambassador, Actress, and Activist and Abra Potkin, Head of Talent/Development and Strategy at OATH/Verizon for their tremendous contributions to our work.
The evening will also feature a special presentation by Innocence Project exoneree, Greg Counts. Greg served 26 years in prison and a year on parole, and his co-defendant VanDyke Perry, who was represented by the Office of the Appellate Defender, spent 10 years in prison for an alleged 1991 sexual assault that never actually took place.
Based on new DNA evidence that excluded the men, the case was reinvestigated and the woman whose testimony was central to the conviction admitted she fabricated the assault. The two men served a combined 36 years for a crime that never occurred. Greg was exonerated in 2018.
The Innocence Project provides pro bono post-conviction legal assistance to people whose claims of innocence can be proven by DNA testing. First launched as a legal clinic in 1992 by Barry C. Scheck and Peter J. Neufeld at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law, our mission is to free the innocent and bring substantive reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment.
Open bar and hors d’oeuvres included.
All guests must be 21 and over, ID is required.
